Plant roots are constantly in a dynamic renewal process. They shed old cells, replacing them with new ones. Rapidly growing roots accumulate more old cells in the plant stem. These older parts of the plant are rich in cellulose, which can only be processed by specialist microorganisms. They transform this cellulose into active carbohydrates - ready food for roots. If a root or leaf is no longer needed by the plant, minerals from these parts are transported (hence their yellow color), and cellulose remains in their place. The plant then gets rid of these dead parts, and more and more unprocessed cellulose accumulates in the stem. In a natural environment, special microorganisms, especially fungi, break down these plant fibers with enzymes.
