Westland Cactus and Succulent Potting Mix 4 l is a specialized, ready-to-use blend designed for planting and repotting cacti and succulents. It contains a carefully selected starter set of nutrients, and the addition of gravel, sand, and Seramis granules helps create the right conditions for the root system.
The structure of the potting mix ensures free drainage of excess water, which is particularly important for plants sensitive to overwatering. At the same time, the presence of Seramis granules helps maintain the availability of moisture and nutrients, supporting proper root development.
Cacti and succulents require a growing medium that does not retain excessive amounts of water around the root system. Therefore, the Westland mix has been enriched with gravel and sand to improve the medium’s drainage properties.
The proper structure allows excess water to drain away more easily, while providing the roots with favorable growing conditions.
Seramis is a granule made from fired, natural clay with a highly porous structure. When watered, its pores absorb water along with the nutrients dissolved in it.
When the growing medium begins to dry out, the moisture stored in the granules can be gradually released. As a result, Seramis helps stabilize moisture levels in the root zone and create a favorable environment for root development.
Westland’s ready-to-use potting mix contains a starter dose of nutrients that provides cacti and succulents with nourishment for the first 4–6 weeks.
After this period, during active growth, the manufacturer recommends fertilizing the plants every 2–3 weeks with a fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti and succulents.
Fill a pot or seed tray with Westland growing medium and level the surface. Make appropriate holes and place the seedlings in them. Then gently press down the medium, top it off if necessary, and water the plants.
Carefully transplant rooted cuttings into separate pots or containers, paying special attention to the delicate roots.
For larger cuttings, you can fill the pot about halfway with potting mix, position the plant correctly, and then fill the space around the roots with fresh potting mix. Gently press down on the potting mix and water thoroughly.
Repotting is best done during the plants’ growing season. Before you begin, water the plant and allow any excess water to drain freely.
For cacti with spines, use folded or wrapped paper when removing the plant from the pot to reduce the risk of pricking your hands.
When it comes to cacti and succulents, the most important thing is to avoid overwatering. In the fall, reduce the frequency of watering.
In winter, do not water the plants unless they show signs of drying out. Starting in late spring, you can begin watering more regularly, adjusting the frequency based on the plant species and prevailing conditions.
Fresh potting mix provides the plants with the nutrients they need for the first 4–6 weeks. Once the initial supply has been used up, you can begin regular fertilization during the growing season.
The manufacturer recommends using a specialized fertilizer for cacti and succulents every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.
Cacti and succulents are best placed in a bright, well-ventilated room with a temperature above 5°C. A south-facing location ensures the plants receive plenty of sunlight.
Note: This potting mix is not intended for heather plants or other species that require acidic soil.
